We’ve reached the letter M and today we’re talking about marketing.

Wikipedia tells us Marketing is the process of communicating the value of a product or service to customers. It is a critical business function for attracting customers.

After all; there is no use having a great product or service to offer customers if they don’t know about the benefits to them.

Most of our clients at Gloucestershire Web Designs are small business owners – solopreneurs, work at home parents and creative people who are turning their hobby into a business. And with most small businesses comes a small sales and marketing budget.

However, there are still plenty of ways to market your business for free:

How to market your business for free

Is your elevator pitch ready at a moment’s notice?

What – you don’t know what an elevator pitch us?

Imagine you get into a lift with a stranger and you both hit the eighth floor button. In that 30 seconds the stranger looks at you, smiles and asks who you are and what you do.

Here’s your 30 second commercial opportunity!

An effective elevator pitch describes who you are, what you do, why you are unique and what’s in it for them. For example “I’m Rachelle Strauss. Put simply I help your customers find you on Google! I work with creative small business owners who want to generate more leads and find new customers online.

The best way to get business is through word of mouth referrals.

Is there someone you know who is complementary, but not competitive to, your business?

At Gloucestershire Web designs we build WordPress websites but we don’t design and produce brochures or business cards for our clients. However we promote a company who does and he promotes us because he doesn’t build websites. It’s a win-win and by teaming together you can offer clients a package deal.

Maybe you run a gym and know someone who stocks trainers. Perhaps you are a nutritionist and know someone who sells supplements and herbal remedies. Have a think about people in your sort of business who you could recommend and ask them to recommend you.

Here at Gloucestershire web design we encourage all of our clients to blog frequently.

Why? Because this is a great way to become a trusted authority in your niche, it’s free marketing AND it will improve your SEO.

When you run your own blog you can promote your content for free via social media and collaborate with other business to blog for one another.

Leave comments on relevant websites too – don’t just say “Great post, thanks!” leave something helpful, instructive or inspiring and you’ll be sure to get some click throughs from people who are interested in what you have to offer.

What about you? Are you marketing your business effectively? If not, one of our clarity consultations would be perfect for you! They cost £60 per hour and take place over the telephone.
